WHAT FUTURE FOR UK RENEWABLE ENERGY ??

THE UK, A HIGHLY INDUSTRIALISED NATION WITH AN ABUNDANCE OF ENGINEERING CENTRES LOOKING AT NEW AND EXCITING SYSTEMS AND  SOURCES OF RENEWABLE ENERGY THAT CAN  REPLACE THE PRESENT DAY FOSSIL AND NUCLEAR FUEL SUPPLIES.

DOES THE UK HAVE THE RENEWABLE RESOURCES AND ENOUGH LAND MASS TO SUPPORT A RANGE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES LARGE ENOUGH TO MAKE THE COUNTRY INDEPENDENT OF FOREIGN SUPPLIES AND PRESSURES ??

EVEN WITH PRESENT DAY FOSSIL FUEL ENERGY SYSTEMS, THE UK IS OFTEN ON A KNIFE EDGE AND IMPORTS ENERGY FROM THE EU AND RUSSIA ETC.

 ANOTHER BIG ISSUE IS THE LACK OF RESERVE ENERGY CAPACITY WITH THE BIG REDUCTION IN THE NATURAL GAS STORAGE DOWN TO JUST 1.5 DAYS.

THE UK GOVERNMENT HAS LAID OUT IT'S RENEWABLE ENERGY PLANS TO REACH CARBON NET ZERO WITH THE BULK OF RENEWABLE SUPPLY FROM OFF-SHORE WIND, A BIG PUSH FOR HEAT PUMPS TO REPLACE GAS BOILERS AND  FINALLY A LARGE NUMBER OF MINI SIZED NUCLEAR POWER STATIONS.

ALONG WITH THESE THREE MAJOR SYSTEM ARE SMALL AMOUNTS OF FUNDING FOR SOLAR FARMS, TREE PLANTING FOR CARBON CAPTURE AND SMALLER AMOUNTS FOR HYDROGEN AND TIDAL/WAVE RESEARCH ETC

SADLY, THE THREE MAJOR SYSTEMS CHOSEN HAVE ALL MAJOR ISSUES, BOTH IN COST AND CAPACITY.

1. OFF SHORE WIND, GIVEN THE RIGHT STEADY WIND VELOCITY THEY CAN BE PRODUCTIVE AND BUILD ENOUGH OF THEM CAN SUPPLY A LARGE PART OF THE UK'S ENERGY NEEDS, HOWEVER AS SEEN ALREADY THIS LATE AUTUMN 2021 HAD A LONG PERIOD OF CALM LIGHT WINDS PRODUCED ONLY 4%  OF POSSIBLE UK ENERGY CAPACITY AND WITHOUT A VAST RESERVE ENERGY STORAGE SUPPLY OF HYDROGEN OR SIMILAR THEN WE CAN NEVER END THE USE OF FOSSIL FUEL POWER OR FOREIGN SUPPLY LINKS.

WITH FEW PROPERTIES HAVING LARGE ENOUGH GROUND SPACE FOR GROUND SOURCE PRIMARY HEATING LOOPS THEN THE CHEAPEST OPTION IS AIR SOURCED HEAT PUMPS.     WHICH SADLY , FOR HEATING PURPOSES ONLY HAVE A Cop OF 2.6 ON AVERAGE, AGAINST A GROUND SOURCED HEAT PUMP WITH A Cop OF 4.8 ON AVERAGE AND A WATER SOURCED HEAT PUMP SYSTEM HAS Cop NEARER 7.0.  THIS MEANS WITH AN AIR SOURCED HEAT PUMP SYSTEM IT IS POSSIBLE TO GAIN 2.6 Kws OF  HEAT FOR EACH 1 Kw OF ELECTRICITY USED, THAT IS ONLY WITH AIR TEMPERATURES ABOVE 40 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT, TEMPERATES BELOW THIS AND HEAT GAIN IS MINIMAL OR NIL.

3. SMALL NUCLEAR POWER STATIONS ARE JUST AN EASY OPTION TO MAKE UP THE REQUIRED NUMBERS,           THE LEGACY FOR THE FUTURE GENERATION WHO WILL NEED TO LIVE WITH THE 10,000 YEARS OF DECOMMISSIONED RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS TO STORE, THE RISK OF A WINDSCALE, THREE MILE ISLAND, CHANNOBAL OR FUKASHIMA ACCIDENT OR EVEN A LARGE SCALE TERRORIST ATTACK WILL ALWAYS BE A CONSTANT DANGER.

THE UK HAS THE WORLDS LARGEST AREA ( AGAINST THE SIZE OF THE NATION ) OF CONTINENTAL SHELF WATERS WITH GOOD TO AVERAGE TIDAL FLOW AND WAVE ACTIONS.
