TIDAL&WAVE TEST TANK FOR HIRE !!
During discussions with sponsors and investors for the next stage of the Hales Tidal Turbine Project, which is to take the micro-generation sized units to market during 2013, part of the Business Plan is to build a special in-house water flow testing tank.
This special Race Track type test tank, similar to the Thor Tank at Virginia Polytechnic Uni, USA, but smaller, at 8m length with flows up t o 3 m/s and above..
One of the proposals is also to add a simple wave making device to the tank system and hire out the facility on a daily basis to allow early stage Tidal and Wave developers, students and private individuals to test their own prototypes at much low costs than at presently possible in the UK.
With the very strict regulations from the EA and other Agencies on access to flowing rivers and the safety issues on conducting wave trials at sea, this test tank could be a simple option especially with the great deal of test equipment available.
While Hales Energy will be using to test tank to further develop our own patented turbine design, mainly to match the gearbox and generator packages to the micro-generation units being marketed, the special test equipment would be available to anyone who wishes to explore their idea or designs without the long wait for space at one of the very few TOW tanks throught the country.
It is also being considered to allow or encourage students at schools and collagues to design Energy Projects that could be tested and displayed in the test tank.
Hopefully this will increase the interest and understanding to the potential of the vast amounts of marine energy that surrounds the UK.
Hales Energy would recommend that all people inierested in tidal energy view a short clip showing the power of tidal flows on Facebook, just type in Open Hydro and view the clip showing testing at EMEC, entitled
"Open Hydro test site at Eday in Orkneys".
