SETTING UP TEST TANK DISPLAY
Before the Water Flow Test and Display Tank in Hastings is drained and dismantled ready for sale, HWT Ltd is attempting to setting up a rather unusual display. The tank test area is just big enough to contain a full size 1MX1M ducted Hales Turbine unit, which has greatly helped the blade, baffle and disc design work by applying a torque load recorded by sensor to the output shaft during each trial.
This time we are gearing up the slow turbine RPM with a system of vee belts to a 1.2 Kw x 24volt PM generator, the large pulley, at 38" links to a 2" pulley on a lay shaft which also has a 6" pulley fitted to the same shaft linked to the 2" on the PMG.
Although the very large turbine area creates a blocking effect in the test tank water flows, it is hoped to get 8 RPM on the turbine which gives approx 152 rpm on the lay shaft, this then should turn the PMG at 456 rpm, approx 1KW output.
The PMG is linked through a special control panel designed and built at Kingston University that as the output increases so a series of 24volt headlamps switch on at the display board one at a time as the power output increases.
The very large 38" pulley vee wheel was produced by a local sponsor.
